I was at the grocery store tonight. There was an employee sweeping the floor with a dust mop at the end of one aisle. He looked at me and said, "Hi." I replied "Hi" and kept moving to turn the corner. He moved to block my way and snapped, "I said 'Hi."

I said, "I said 'hi' back," and stepped around him. As I was walking away, he said, "Not like people can hear you, talking all soft!"

I wish I had snapped back, "Get out of my way!" or reported him to a manager or said, "It's not my fault you can't hear!" instead of acting like it was my fault and taking his crap. I don't know why I care so much about not offending people who feel that they are entitled to offend me. :(

Ugh.

I dislike people sometimes.

I'd report him (or anyone like him) to their manager, should this particular situation arise again.

No one is entitled to be an asshole.

Oh, I know what you mean, I've felt like that so so many times, but I don't think that kind of self-reproaching does anyone any good, either. Don't blame yourself just because you couldn't predict that someone would decide to verbally attack you out of nowhere and hence hadn't thought of enough ready-made retorts to hand out. That doesn't make you a weenie who doesn't stand up for yourself. You did stand up for yourself, telling him you'd already answered him, and if he or someone else does something similar in the future, you've come up with an excellent strategy and further retorts.
