It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools.

Whew, finished my physics homework with 23 hours to spare.

Too bad I still have about 500 chemistry problems to do. *rolleyes*

So Earl has moved up north. It took longer to get here than I thought. It was just beginning to rain when I feel asleep around 4 am. I slept through whatever hit us. I went outside around noon and it was just raining, so I packed my stuff up and came home. I didn't see any flooding or damage on the way home. I'm surprised since last year's Nor'easter did far more damage. I guess Earl didn't get close enough to us.

So I guess that's it! :)

It's midnight and so far, it hasn't even rained and the wind is barely blowing here in Va. Beach. I'm watching the news and it looks like it's blowing pretty hard in Kitty Hawk, NC.

I went to Food Lion earlier today and stocked up. This is what I got:

* a bag of rolls from the bakery
* some Ramen noodles
* Fruit Roll-ups (BOGO with MVP card)
* 2 1-liter bottles (99 cents apiece with MVP card)
* three 15-ounce cans of Green Giant vegetables

Luckily, I'm staying with my father (who coincidentally has the middle name Earl) and he has a ton of canned goods and 10 gallon jugs of water. He didn't even lose power when Isabel came through in 2003, so I'm hoping he'll have similar luck this time. Plus, I worry about him some time. I'm a little worried about my mother too, as my stepfather is out of town and she's riding it out alone this time, but she's younger and more resourceful than my father. Plus, she has a next door neighbor who has helped her out a lot over the years.

The two of us are supposed to leave for Annapolis, MD so time tomorrow for out annual family reunion. Earl is supposed to be gone by the afternoon, so hopefully things will work out.

Someone tried to come into my apartment yesterday morning around 3:15 am. I live alone and I was online because I couldn't sleep. Someone started pushing on the door and shaking the doorknob like they were trying to get in. They even banged on the door once. I freaked out and called 911. Four policemen came to my door. Whoever it was was gone by the time they got there. They said they looked around and didn't see anyone, but they had had a similar call from someone on the other side of the building the previous week and they think it's someone getting drunk and going to the wrong door. (A lot of college students live in my building.) They probably thought I was crazy because I answered the door holding a bat and shaking like a leaf. They asked if I looked out the window or peephole to see who it was. I told them I was too scared. I just ran to get my bat out of the closet and grabbed the phone in my other hand and called 911.

I'm taking a creative writing course for the summer semester and I'm kind of struggling. I'm not really good at making something up on command and on a deadline, which is why I never get far during NaNoWriMo. My assignment is due at 11:59 pm tonight and I am totally stuck. The assignment is:

1) Choose an abstract idea (love, hate, work, peace, etc.) or an emotion (happiness, sadness, confusion, etc.), then choose a series of words to associate with them (color, sound, smell, food, person, etc.), then write a prosodic description. DONE
1a) Post responses to at least two other posts. DONE

2) Choose two short stories from a list of ten to read and analyze. DONE
2a) Post responses to at least two other posts. DONE

3) Choose one character from each of the two short stories and write a dialogue between them. DONE
3a) Post responses to at least two other posts. DONE

4) Write and post a rough draft of an original short story that is 6-15 double-spaced pages. (We can post as many rough drafts as we want.) DONE
4a) Read and evaluate everyone else's rough drafts. If they post more than one rough draft, we have to read and evaluate each rough draft. DONE

4b) Based on your peers' comments, write a final draft and e-mail to the instructor. DONE

I've done 1, 1a, and 4. I'm working on 3/3a right now and I keep hitting a brick wall. Forget 4a and 4b. Some of these people have posted three or four rough drafts of their stories. I posted my story last night, but so far, I've gotten zero comments and four views (out of 20 people in the class).

Some people have clearly ignored the bit where the instructor said to consider your peers' academic and real life schedules. I don't have time to write three or four rough drafts of my own story, much less read and review three or four rough drafts of everyone else's.

It feels like an extra slap in the face that someone would have time to not only write four rough drafts but jump ahead to the next assignment, but doesn't have time to read or post any reviews to my story. Which I interpret to mean either "Your story isn't worth the time it would take to read" or "I read it and it sucked so much that I don't have anything nice to say about it so I'll say nothing".

I've been working on this on and off for three weeks between work and writer's block. I worked on this assignment all day Friday, Saturday, and now today, but I don't know if I can push my way through in time to get everything finished and posted before midnight.

I made it. I made all of my posts and I submitted the final draft of my story at 11:57 pm. And I finally got a couple of reviews, both positive. I feel a little better.

For the past two semesters I've been taking parametric modeling, thinking that learning how to use Autodesk Inventor would look good on my resume. I've been working on my final project since the beginning of this month, which is supposed to use everything I've learned. Well, this evening I got to class, went to take out my thumb drive, which has every file for that class on it (about 5 GB worth), and it wasn't in my bag. I turned my bag inside out, as well as my purse, and it wasn't there. I thought maybe I left it behind in class last Wednesday asked a woman in my class who also works as the lab assistant and she said it wasn't there. My instructor had told us ahead of time that he wouldn't be in class that day, so I just went ahead and left because I couldn't do any work.

I'm pretty sure I put my drive in my bag after class, like I always do, and I don't have Inventor on my computer or laptop at home (too expensive), so I know I did not take the drive out of my bag at any point between Wednesday and today. I thought that maybe the drive fell out of my bag at some point so I drove to my father's house, which is about a mile away from school and asked if he'd seen it. He said he didn't so we looked around his house but we didn't find it. Then I came home and tore my house up and I still didn't find it. I remembered that I had been at my cousin's house Friday night because I tutor him, so I called and asked if he had seen it. He said he hadn't. And even if I left it there, he has three destructive little boys, and no computer, so he probably doesn't even know what a thumb drive looks like and it probably ended up in the trash can anyway.

Clearly my drive is gone and it's not coming back. I'm just going to have to e-mail my instructor and tell him to go ahead and fail me. There's no point in me even going back to class since all of the files with my class notes were on that drive. I don't have anything to work with and I can't make up my final project in a week, much less an entire semester of work. Plus, there's files from last semester I need too. I'm just sorry I wasted so much time working my butt off only to end up with nothing because I'm such an imbecile.

It's just for the U.S. Census Bureau, and it won't last past this summer, if that long. Right now, I'm a Questionnaire Assistance Center Representative, which means I sit at a small table and help people who have questions about filling out their census or didn't receive a census or wants to know about getting a census job. I didn't know what it would be like, since training was so boring that I had to struggle not to fall asleep. I'll be doing this until about mid-April. Enumerating (enumeration?) begins in May so I might start doing that. Enumerators are those people who come to your house if you didn't return your form or fill it out correctly.

I'm 24 hours late on this, but here I am.

I'm so glad that Shen and Zhao finally won Olympic gold. If my girl Michelle Kwan will never win, at least they have. I haven't been this satisfied with an Olympic finish since Kristi Yamaguchi in 1992. I'm also really pleased to see their compatriots/training mates/friends Qing Pang and Jian Tong have the skate of their lives and win silver. IMO, they have always been a little overlooked between Shen/Zhao and the big-trick Zhangs. And how great it is to see Yao Bin come full circle, from being laughed off the ice 30 years ago.

Seeing Shen and Zhao win gold was really the only thing I was really invested in for these Games (except maybe seeing someone beat Plushenko in the mens competition) so I'm happy. Maybe in 20-24 years we'll see their kid skating in the Olympics! :oP

* Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] ontd_political:

DC Cops Can Arrest You for Carrying More Than Two Condoms

Washington DC police can arrest a woman in any area they’ve declared prostitution free zone. And in a backasswards move to curb prostitution, carrying more than two condoms is considered proof of intention to prostitute.

Sooooo, say I visit Washington DC and I decided to pop into the drug store and grab some condoms. Well, the smallest pack of condoms come in three, which is more than two. So that automatically makes me a prostitute?

Secondly: Washington DC police can arrest a woman

I hope that is just the blogger's interpretation, because if not...this new law applies only to women??? So a male looking to be served by a prostitute can, say, roll around DC with a truck full of condoms and the police can't touch him but a woman riding with him is going to jail for prostitution? Gee, I wonder why they would do that? Probably for the same reason they try to pluck off female prostitutes one by one while leaving male pimps and sex traffickers to grab more females to replace them.

* The spring semester started today. I thought I was okay with regard to books, since I'm just taking one class, the second half of parametric solid modeling. I should have been able to use the same book I used in the fall. Well, the joke was on me. The drafting department upgraded the software we use over the holidays. The company that makes the program made major changes to the software also, which means the entire setup, buttons, commands, etc. have changed and I was up S*** Creek without a paddle. In short, I got Vista-ed. Now I have until 5:00 pm Wednesday to scrape up $115 for the brand new assigned book for the brand new software (no used books!) because even if I could figure out the program on my own, my instructor assigns a lot of reading from the book.

One of the reasons I'm so upset about this is that when I took basic drafting the first time around, my instructor (who is also the head of the drafting department) told us that they didn't change or upgrade programs in the middle of the year because 1) it threw students off and 2) they shouldn't have to buy two different books for two halves of the same class.

Well, off to Ebay and Craigslist to see if I can get a better deal.

* My great-aunt's husband died last week. They were sitting on the bed talking and he just fell over dead. I was sorry to see him go. The funeral was this morning. I wanted to go but I'm in Norfolk, it's in Annapolis, MD and I wouldn't have made it home in time for class.

* Lastly, RIP Miep Gies, age 100.

I mentioned a couple of months ago that I lost my job; in fact, my final day was the day Michael Jackson died (and that piece of news certainly didn't improve my day). Well, my mother called me a couple of days ago and said that she read an article about my ex-employer in the newspaper and that the company spokesman was quoted as saying that they had hired back everyone they had let go 6 months earlier. I pointed out that it is obviously not true since I haven't heard squat from them since the day I got booted out.

And she said "Well, you need to call them up and let them know that you're interested in coming back to work." My philosophy is that if they want me back, they would have already asked me to come back. Then my mother said, "They probably want you back, you probably just got lost in the shuffle. The economy is bad and you have to be aggressive, blah blah blah." Whatever.

My mother is always telling me that whenever I want to do something and I'm not invited, I need to be pushy about it. She's never actually used the word "pushy" but that's what her "advice" amounts to, and she's been giving it to me since I was a kid. If I got shut out of a group/clique/friendship circle or someone threw a party and didn't invite me, I made them do it because I wasn't friendly enough, I was too quiet, or I didn't act interested enough in them, and I needed to ask them if I could come along or simply invite myself so they would know that I was interested. I guess I give off vibes that said, "Have a party and blatantly snub me!"

Well, now I know why I wasn't asked back to work. I looked too happy or didn't cry when I was laid off! :o|

Well, I got 5,027/50,000. Not bad for four days of writing, and better than last year. I made my mind up a few days ago that I wanted to reach at least 5,000 words, so at least I surpassed that. I think I'm just too busy in November. I wasn't totally original either. I wrote an Ugly Betty fanfic instead of original fic, which I knew good and well wouldn't reach 50,000 words. No romance, just angst and drama. Something that if I were a writer on the show, I'd write.

Maybe some day, I'll finish it.
xerox78: (Default)
So, I finally dug myself out from all the stuff I'm doing and started NaNo. I couldn't think of anything original, so I decided to write a fanfic whose plot bunny has been hopping around my head for months. So far I have 1,095 words written.

I hope everyone who celebrates Halloween had a good one. I didn't do much, but I still dressed up. Anyway, here are a couple of photos (with some of my face blurred because this is public):

cut for possibly politically polarizing costume )

I want to do NaNoWriMo again this year, but I probably won't get any further than I did last year. I don't think I posted about this, but I lost my job this past June and I'm picking up whatever bit of work I can find right now. I also went back to school last spring. I have about 5 different things going right now, so NaNo is going to have to be put on the back burner for the time being.
