I realized I never updated this post. I finally found a monitor with digital hookup, even though I ended up paying $55 more than I wanted to. The monitor was $25 more than I wanted to pay, but it was 3 days before Christmas and I was sick of looking. Then I went to hook it up and only a VGA cable was in the box. I called the people up and asked about it and they said that the DVI-D cable wasn't included so I had to fork over 30 more bucks for a DVI-D cable. But, I finally got my new fast computer online.

I've been coming across various "Books I Read in 2011" posts. I think I read maybe...2? My schoolwork takes up the majority of my time with sleep coming in second. Naturally, NaNoWriMo was definitely out of the question, and I actually had a real plot bunny this year. I guess it will have to wait until I graduate. Usually I

try to catch up on my reading during breaks. I keep a list of books I want to read and cross them off when I've read them. I didn't cross any off this break. I caught up on fanfics and kink memes instead.

School starts back on Monday, so I'm trying to finish reading as much fanfic as I can. You know you're a geek when you keep a spreadsheet of WIPs, favorite stories, and stories you plan to read, with columns dedicated to title, last updated, url, and summary, and tabs for each fandom.

The House GOP's Plan to Redefine Rape

Some quotes:

Republicans propose that the rape exemption be limited to "forcible rape." This would rule out federal assistance for abortions in many rape cases, including instances of statutory rape, many of which are non-forcible. For example: If a 13-year-old girl is impregnated by a 24-year-old adult, she would no longer qualify to have Medicaid pay for an abortion.

Other types of rapes that would no longer be covered by the exemption include rapes in which the woman was drugged or given excessive amounts of alcohol, rapes of women with limited mental capacity, and many date rapes.

As for the incest exception, the bill would only allow federally funded abortions if the woman is under 18.

In other words, "forcible rape" = "someone physically holding you down and forcing sexual intercourse on you while you kick and scream". If that.

I was at the grocery store tonight. There was an employee sweeping the floor with a dust mop at the end of one aisle. He looked at me and said, "Hi." I replied "Hi" and kept moving to turn the corner. He moved to block my way and snapped, "I said 'Hi."

I said, "I said 'hi' back," and stepped around him. As I was walking away, he said, "Not like people can hear you, talking all soft!"

I wish I had snapped back, "Get out of my way!" or reported him to a manager or said, "It's not my fault you can't hear!" instead of acting like it was my fault and taking his crap. I don't know why I care so much about not offending people who feel that they are entitled to offend me. :(

I'm taking a creative writing course for the summer semester and I'm kind of struggling. I'm not really good at making something up on command and on a deadline, which is why I never get far during NaNoWriMo. My assignment is due at 11:59 pm tonight and I am totally stuck. The assignment is:

1) Choose an abstract idea (love, hate, work, peace, etc.) or an emotion (happiness, sadness, confusion, etc.), then choose a series of words to associate with them (color, sound, smell, food, person, etc.), then write a prosodic description. DONE
1a) Post responses to at least two other posts. DONE

2) Choose two short stories from a list of ten to read and analyze. DONE
2a) Post responses to at least two other posts. DONE

3) Choose one character from each of the two short stories and write a dialogue between them. DONE
3a) Post responses to at least two other posts. DONE

4) Write and post a rough draft of an original short story that is 6-15 double-spaced pages. (We can post as many rough drafts as we want.) DONE
4a) Read and evaluate everyone else's rough drafts. If they post more than one rough draft, we have to read and evaluate each rough draft. DONE

4b) Based on your peers' comments, write a final draft and e-mail to the instructor. DONE

I've done 1, 1a, and 4. I'm working on 3/3a right now and I keep hitting a brick wall. Forget 4a and 4b. Some of these people have posted three or four rough drafts of their stories. I posted my story last night, but so far, I've gotten zero comments and four views (out of 20 people in the class).

Some people have clearly ignored the bit where the instructor said to consider your peers' academic and real life schedules. I don't have time to write three or four rough drafts of my own story, much less read and review three or four rough drafts of everyone else's.

It feels like an extra slap in the face that someone would have time to not only write four rough drafts but jump ahead to the next assignment, but doesn't have time to read or post any reviews to my story. Which I interpret to mean either "Your story isn't worth the time it would take to read" or "I read it and it sucked so much that I don't have anything nice to say about it so I'll say nothing".

I've been working on this on and off for three weeks between work and writer's block. I worked on this assignment all day Friday, Saturday, and now today, but I don't know if I can push my way through in time to get everything finished and posted before midnight.

I made it. I made all of my posts and I submitted the final draft of my story at 11:57 pm. And I finally got a couple of reviews, both positive. I feel a little better.

I just LOVE that the movie "Talk to Me" is in limited release, while "Who's Your Caddy" can be found in every theater around. [/sarcasm]

#$%$^% #%% $^^ #$%#$ &^&^&$ %$%$* &*&*!!!!!!!!!

This is just not fair.

Backstory: My mother's side of the family is having a reunion in Maryland this weekend. We are due to leave tomorrow morning. Initially, 6 or 7 people were going to ride with us and my mother was going to rent a minivan for all of us to ride in and we were going to stay in a hotel or motel and we would all split the cost for both. Well, one of my mother's sisters decided that she wanted to ride up to MD with another one of their sisters and my grandmother decided she didn't want to go at all. Therefore, we were down to four people: myself, my mother, my stepfather, and one of my mother brothers. We were going to ride in my mother's car and one of her aunts in MD offered for us to stay at her house, which has three extra bedrooms. Cool, right? Wrong. I came home at 10:30 tonight to find a message from my mother on my answering machine saying that Grandma changed her mind and wanted to go after all. (This happened after 7:00 pm tonight because that's the time I left home.)

So guess who is going to be stuck riding in the middle of the backseat all the way to MD? And guess who is going to be stuck sleeping on the floor because there aren't enough beds to go around? And guess who is going to have to give up her share of the food? And guess who is going to have to leave half or more of her things at home to make room for Grandma's things? And guess who will probably be stuck being lectured to by Grandma and who knows who about being grateful to have a nice ride to MD if she dares show any slight displeasure at any of these situations?

Since we're leaving tomorrow at 7:30 am (although if Grandma is true to character, it won't be until 10:00 because she'll just be getting out of bed and her things won't be packed), renting a van and reserving any hotel rooms are out of the question. Plus, my mother says that the cost will be too much, even split between 5 people (which would really be 4 people since Grandma has no money). So instead, the other just decided to dump on the youngest person with the least say in anything in the group to make room for her.

I've been looking forward to this trip for weeks and now I am seriously considering staying home, because I know I'll be miserable. The only reason it's not concrete is because it will be hard to justify to my boss asking for today and Monday off if I don't actually go anywhere.

This is just not fair. *punches wall*

(I apologize if the French in the title is shaky, but I've been out of school for 9 years.)

ETA: Normally I wouldn't be so angry, but my grandmother does this kind of thing all the time. She'll ask someone to drive her somewhere and then wait until they arrive at the house to tell them that she decided not to go after all. Or she'll ask some to drive her to a store like Wal-Mart, and when they get there, say "Did I say I wanted to go to Wal-Mart? Actually, I meant I'd like to go to Big Lots (which is 5 miles away from Wal-Mart in the opposite direction)." If anyone tries to call her out, she breaks out the "but I'm your mother/grandmother and I'm old and sick" guilt trip and sometimes even the tears. I'm sure if my mother had told her that it was too late to come along she would have given my mother the "This might be the last chance I have to see my father and sisters" line. Who could say no to that, since it's true. Plus, she knows which of her kids can be pushed over the most easily, and that includes my mother.

Clothes made her mall visit too short
A woman gets the boot when her pants are deemed revealing.

There is nothing inappropriate about this young lady's outfit. Her breasts are not hanging out of her tank top, and despite what the security guard claims, I doubt her buttocks were hanging out of the bottom of her shorts.

It is unbelievable that she would be thrown out of a mall for wearing shorts that ONE OF THEIR STORES SOLD HER! I'm sure it would be considered unreasonable by all if someone complained about Patrick Henry Mall selling inappropriate clothing.

There is little doubt in my mind that the complaining shoppers were most likely either a) insecure flabby biddies who saw Ms. Vande Hei and felt jealous, b) insecure wives or girlfriends who caught their husbands/boyfriends eyeing a pretty girl and felt threatened, or c) possibly someone who knows Ms. Vande Hei personally and had a personal vendetta against her.

There is even less doubt in my mind that one could walk through Patrick Henry Mall at any given time and see at least ten girls or woman dressed like Paris Hilton or Pamela Anderson, but are left to shop in peace.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

(I can't help but wonder if these complaining shoppers looked at Brooke Vande Hei and saw not a mother and sister shopping while dressed suitably to the weather, but a sex object flaunting her wares -- or perhaps Janet Jackson II.)

To whoever keeps going to Northside Pool in Norfolk, Virginia on Saturday afternoons and throwing up in the water so that the lifeguards have to send everyone home so they can clean the pool, please quit it! This is the third Saturday in a row that you have done this. Besides ruining things for all of the other swimmers, I sure the lifeguards just love having to work late just to clean up the puke that you have no interest in keeping to yourself. Why don't you just stay home since you obviously cannot keep control of your stomach?

Signed,
Xerox (who has had this ache in her leg for almost a month since she cannot get into the water for some low-impact therapy)

I have this old poster that I have put up at Halloween time every year since I was about 10 years old. Of course I had to pack it up when I moved. I saw it less than a month ago when I was looking for something else. Now I can't remember where I saw it and I can't find it after turning my apartment upside down. Now the trick or treaters won't know to come to my apartment on Monday night. Of course my poster would disappear the day I bought a bunch of candy to give out, too. Someone obviously wants me to be miserable.
