Yesterday morning at 6:30 am I was doing my daily routine of listening to the news on the tv as I got ready for work so I could listen for the weather and traffic report before I left. I was in the bathroom and not quite fully awake when I heard the reporter say the words "tractor-trailer" and "Chesapeake Bay". I paid little attention until I heard her say "There was a ball of fire, the truck went through the guardrail and now the truck is in the Chesapeake Bay!"

I ran out into the front room to watch the rest of the broadcast, and sure enough that's what had happened. A "breaking news" report was saying that a tractor-trailer crossing the 17-mile-long Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel drove through the guardrail and into the water.

Besides it being very tragic, it scared the snot out of me because my stepfather is a truck driver, he often crosses the CBBT between Va. Beach and the Eastern Shore, and he was at work! They didn't find out who the truck belonged to or who was driving until about noon time, so I was checking the net at work all morning yesterday and praying it wasn't him. Later, my mother told me that he had called her later that morning when he heard what happened to let her know it wasn't him. She said she had been worried too and had been getting calls from family members making sure it wasn't him.

I feel very badly for Howard Hannah's family, because I know what it is like to worry about a truck driver. I remember about 6 years ago my stepfather calling home in the middle of the night to tell my mother and I that he had been in an accident and his truck had overturned into a ditch. (He wasn't hurt) But I will say a prayer for my stepfather and all of the truck drivers of the world.
