Tsunami, or God Don't Like Ugly?
Dec. 29th, 2004 08:06 pmLike just about everyone else, I am horrified by the recent tsunami that has killed tens of thousands of people. There was a thread at a message board I frequent discussing this, when one poster wondered what kind of ugly happened over there that God didn't like to have that happen to them, because (s)he didn't see that kind of disaster happening on its own. Another poster responded, "worshipping Buddah and other gods". In other words, being a religion other than Christian. I just cannot get over how people who profess to be "people of God" would say such things and imply that the tsunami victims were deservedly smited by God, or worse yet, using a huge natural disaster to strut and pontificate and show off how righteous they think they are.
These are the same people, who less than a week ago were bemoaning that fact that people have "forgotten what Christmas is really about" and parrotting "Jesus is the reason for the season". Speaking of Jesus, if he were still on earth, somehow I don't think he would be sitting back smugly pointing fingers and saying/thinking, "That's what you get for not being Christian", like some people are doing. He would be out there helping people, whether they are Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, or Wiccan. At least, that is what I believe. Also speaking of the season, why is it that very few people say "peace on earth" and "goodwill toward all men" during the holiday season anymore? Now it's "Get the terrorists and whoever may be standing in the way" and "goodwill toward all men, as long as they are Christian, heterosexual, not poor, 'traditional', 'vote their morals', and preferably white". Somehow, I doubt if many these people even lifted a finger to give to anyone "less fortunate".
I'm not religious myself, although I do believe in God. However, I think that everyone, regardless of religion, would do well to remember that ugly is ugly, no matter who you are.
